When it comes to staining masonry surfaces, one of the most important steps is proper mixing. At Mineral Stains, we use premium mineral pigments—known for their durability and rich color. However, because these pigments are heavier than the organic pigments found in traditional paints, it’s essential to mix the stain thoroughly to avoid sediment buildup and color inconsistencies during application.
Why Proper Mixing Matters
- Consistency: Without mixing, pigment sediment can settle at the bottom of the bucket, leading to uneven color application.
- Durability: Properly mixed stains ensure uniform pigment distribution, enhancing the stain’s performance and longevity.
How to Mix Your Stain
- Use an electric drill with a mixer attachment for best results.
- Mix for 2-5 minutes, depending on your tools and the size of your bucket. Smaller mixers may take longer, so ensure you’re using the right tool for the job.
- Check the bottom of the bucket to ensure all sediment is fully incorporated.
- Lightly stir the contents of any container or bucket every 15-20 minutes with a wood stir stick, ensuring that pigment is evenly distributed from bottom to top.
Preparing Vertical Walls
To achieve the best results on vertical masonry walls, ensure the surface is prepared properly:
- Walls with excess moisture or that are not fully cured may absorb the stain unevenly.
- Apply our Eco-Prim or Fixativ thinner to create an even surface for stain absorption.
How We Ensure Quality Before Shipping
Before sending you your stain, we add colorants using a paint dispenser and mix it using an automatic Paint/Stain shaker. This process ensures the stain is well-mixed before it arrives at your doorstep. However, because sediment can settle during transit, we recommend giving the stain a final mix before use.
